Sample home check list:

Smoke Detectors:

  • Test smoke detectors.
  • Replace if 10 years or older.
  • Change batteries when you change your clocks.
  • Put electrical tape over top terminal ends of batteries to prevent terminals from contacting metal and causing a fire.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors:

  • Test Carbon Monoxide detectors.
  • Replace if 5 years or older.

Note: Carbon Monoxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless.

Take a tour of the home for hazards:

  • Ensure storage is maintained a minimum of 3 feet from Furnace / Hot Water Heater
  • Ensure propane is not stored in home or garage.
  • Use outlet strips containing a fuse / reset button instead of extension cords.

 Make a plan:

  • Identify exits in the home, including windows. Know a minimum of two ways out.
  • Check windows. Know how to open them and ensure that they are big enough to get out of.

Practice a Fire Drill:

  • When the alarm goes off, get out.
  • Instruct family members: if there is smoke, stay low and go.
  • Identify a meeting place for family members to assemble at.
  • Instruct family members to NEVER go back inside once outside!
