Smoke Detector Instructions

The requirements for the placement of Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors:

NEW CODE AS OF 1/01/19- ALL SMOKE DETECTORS THAT ARE BATTERY OPERATED ONLY MUST BE REPLACED WITH THE 10 YEAR SEALED UNITS TO COMPLY WITH THE RESALE OR RENTAL OF RESIDENCE.

Per manufacture, smoke detectors should be replaced after 10 years and carbon monoxide detectors after 7 years of age unless they are the 10-year sealed battery type and or the 10-year sealed battery hard wired type.

Smoke Detectors are required to be mounted or wall on the ceiling on each level of the residence. (see figure 3, 4 & 5)

Carbon Monoxide Detectors are required near any sleeping areas which can be plugged in, battery operated or combination with smoke detector.
